Time-frame of project: February 2013 – December 2014
Project status: Complete
Role: Lead Game Designer and Programmer
Phase Blocks is a falling-block puzzle game where all blocks must be phased before they can be cleared from the grid, and blocks are not cleared until their entire chain is phased. Player must merge phase arrows together (by dropping them on top of each other or merging in through the sides) to set off phase explosions, and can combo them together for huge screen-covering explosions.
My goal from the start was to make a falling-block puzzle game that never let you turn your brain off. I spent a long time making the different mechanics mesh together well and simplifying the design, and while it took a lot longer than I hoped it would I’m pretty happy with the end result.
You can read an article related to my design of the game in the blog section here: https://ozziesmith.wordpress.com/blog-2/the-four-stages-of-puzzle-game-mastery/
